JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standards and refers to Japan’s national standards established under the “Industrial Standardization Act.”
www.jisc.go.jp is responsible for deliberating on the establishment and revision of JIS standards, while the secretariat functions are handled by the Industrial Technology and Environment Bureau of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
On June 9, 2004, the “Industrial Standardization Act” was amended, and a new JIS mark certification system went into effect on October 1, 2005.
As a result, JIS mark certification is now conducted by private third-party organizations (registered certification bodies) registered with the government.
